OBIT SCHAFER, DON F.

SCHAFER, Don F., ("U.S.M.C. Lt. Col. Ret.") of Virginia, died Friday, March 5, 1993, of a cardiac arrest in Fairfax Hospital. Mr. Schafer was born in San Francisco, Calif., and joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from San Jose State University. He served two tours in Vietnam; and was a recipient of the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Navy Unit Citation. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel after twenty years of service, and earned a masters degree from Southern Illinois University. After his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1986, Mr. Schafer joined Titan Applications, and was promoted to vice president of federal systems development in 1992. Survivors include his wife, Janice Pendergrass Schafer, formerly of Hillsville, Va.; four daughters, Elizabeth Burt of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Julie A. Price of Hespenria, Calif., Dawn F. Schafer of Ontario, Canada, Mary Gray of Rockville, Md.; one son, David Gray of McLean, Va.; his parents, Don and Laura Schafer, one brother, Robert "Pat" Schafer, and one sister, Donna Joy "Missy" Schafer, all of Sacramentao, Calif., and one grandson, Jarren James Burt, Rancho Cucamongo, Calif. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 1993, at the Marine Corps Memorial Chapel on the Quantico Marine Base. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, March 8, 1993, from 7 until 9 p.m. at Murphy's Funeral Home, 1102 W. Broad St., Falls Church, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
