INMATE'S ASSAULT HEARING POSTPONED

A preliminary hearing for a former Pulaski Correctional Unit inmate charged with assaulting four officers in December was postponed Monday.

Frank Darryl Allen, 35, was brought to Pulaski County General District Court from the Augusta Correctional Unit, where he was taken Dec. 18 after guards in Pulaski said they were attacked by him and taunted with the possibility that Allen was carrying the AIDS virus.

A new preliminary hearing date has not been set.

Allen was charged with four counts of inflicting bodily harm on correctional officers for two incidents Dec. 16 and 17 at Camp One near Dublin.

The guards say they were attacked when they attempted to handcuff Allen.

Two guards were bitten, one lost two teeth from an elbow-blow to the mouth, and a fourth officer was scratched on both hands and had a sprained wrist.

David Warburton, the Pulaski County public defender, asked for the continuance Monday after telling Judge Ed Turner he had not had time to consult with his client. Warburton also said Allen's medical records were not available for Monday's hearing.

Warburton said he had asked that Allen be brought to Pulaski County four days before the hearing so he would have time to consult with him.

Allen is serving a 10-year sentence for breaking and entering and grand larceny. His mandatory parole date is in June.
