SHOOTING SPREE KILLS 1, WOUNDS 1

A woman was killed and another woman was seriously wounded Monday by a gunman who fled in the car of one of the victims, police said.

A suspect, Darryl Quentin Smith, 32, was later arrested while walking along railroad tracks near Fort Eustis, shortly after the stolen car was found abandoned, said Lynn James, a Police Department spokeswoman. Smith is being held without bond on murder, auto theft and firearms charges.

Both women were shot several times, witnesses said. "We do not know what his motive was," James said.

The first victim, Stephanie Hawkins, 51, was shot outside a convenience store about 8 a.m. and managed to stagger inside for help. She was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where she was in serious condition Monday night.

The gunman then took the woman's car and drove to the Dozier Middle School parking lot. There, teacher Donna L. Harrison, 45, was shot to death in her car, James said.
