MOTEL-SITE CLEANUP BEGINS

Construction workers have started cleaning away debris left by a fire at the Holiday Inn-Salem on Feb. 28.

Dick Metz, senior vice president of Krisch Hotels Inc., said the rebuilding of the motel's lobby, restaurant and meeting rooms could begin by mid-April.

Loeb Construction Co. of Roanoke is using bulldozers to clean away the rubble from the closed motel.

Metz said a final settlement has not be reached with the insurance company. He said no firm estimate of the damage has been established.

If construction begins in mid-April, Metz expects it to be completed by mid- or late July.

The hotel burned in the early morning, and it took firefighters 33 minutes to arrive.

A 911 call from a pay phone at the motel was routed to Roanoke dispatchers instead of Roanoke County.

C&P officials have admitted their 911 database contained incorrect information.
