BIG CAMPAIGN DONORS FINED

Ten major political donors, including developer Donald Trump and the architects of corporate takeovers, have agreed to fines totaling $64,000 after admitting they broke a Watergate-era law limiting contributions.

All admitted violating a law capping contributions to federal candidates and campaign committees at $25,000 a year, the government said Wednesday. The law was designed to curb the political influence of the wealthy.

In addition to Trump, those fined by the Federal Election Commission included agriculture businessman Dwayne Andreas, chairman of Archer Daniels Midland Corp. and annually one of the nation's biggest political contributors.

Also on the list were corporate takeover specialists Harold Simmons, Henry Kravis and Ronald O. Perelman. The bulk of their donations came in 1988 as Congress considered taking steps to limit hostile business takeovers, including tougher tax treatment of corporate debt.
