AT 58,952 GALLONS, N.H. COW A CHAMPION

Maxima the milk cow is aptly named.

The 6-year-old Holstein produced a world-record 58,952 pounds of milk last year - about 118,000 glasses, her manager said Wednesday.

Tullando Royalty Maxima, known affectionately as Maxima, wiped out the old Guinness Book of Records mark of 55,661 pounds of milk produced in 1975 in Rochester, Ind., by a cow named Beecher Arlinda Ellen.

Maxima is the queen of the highest-producing herd in New Hampshire.

Rendy Tullar, who manages the herd, says he didn't know Maxima was anything special when she was a heifer. She now milks 120 pounds a day, he said.

The herd is kept in a free-stall barn, where the cows wander about at will and feed at a common trough. Maxima pushes the other cows aside when she feeds, and spends a lot of time lying in her stall, chewing the cud.
