PUBLIC HEARING SET ON IVANHOE SITE

Industrial development authorities from Carroll and Wythe counties will hold a public hearing in the Ivanhoe Civic League building at 7 p.m. April 7 on the future of the Ivanhoe Industrial Park.

Earl Joy, executive director of the Joint Industrial Development Authority of Wytheville, Rural Retreat and Wythe County, told authority members Thursday that the meeting was scheduled because of concerns by Carroll officials over maintaining the industrial park's 200 acres.

The acreage, which is in both counties, was donated to be an industrial park in 1967 after National Carbide closed its plant on the property. No permanent tenant has been found for the park, mainly because of its isolated location.

The hearing will focus on whether the two counties should sell some or all of the land.

Wythe County Administrator Billy Branson told the authority that neither county could decide by itself to sell any of the property. "Neither one can just up and say do it. You've got to agree," he said.

Two years ago, the league got a 10-year lease from the two authorities on 20 acres of the property for a section it calls Jubilee Park. It has held summer activities there since 1987.
