COVINGTON MAN KILLED IN ALLEGHANY ACCIDENT

A Covington man was killed Friday morning when his pickup truck ran off Virginia 311 in Alleghany County and struck the outside of the Alleghany Tunnel, a state police dispatcher said.

Walter T. Quarles, 43, was dead at the scene of the 3 a.m. accident, the dispatcher said.

His truck was heading south when it crossed into the northbound lane before crashing. Quarles was not wearing a seat belt, the dispatcher said.
