MISSING VA PATIENT WENT DOWNTOWN

A patient who disappeared from the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Friday had not gone to West Virginia, as officials thought, but to downtown Roanoke.

VA spokeswoman Pat Clark said the patient, whose identity was not revealed, returned Saturday on his own.

"The patient advised hospital staff that he had been downtown," Clark said.

VA officials called off the search for the patient three hours after he was reported missing. Officials had spoken with the man's aunt in West Virginia and decided he probably was heading there, as he had before, officials said.
