Jim Valvano, the former North Carolina State coach who is battling cancer, was named recipient of the 1993 Most Courageous Award as selected by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Valvano, serving as a college basketball analyst for ESPN and ABC Sports, will be honored Monday at the annual USBWA awards brunch during this year's NCAA Final Four in New Orleans. Initiated in 1978, the award annually honors a player, coach or administrator who demonstrates unusual courage that reflects honor on the sport of basketball.
