SHAWSVILLE LAYS IT ON CRAIG COUNTY IN BASEBALL

Gordon Howard had a three-run triple, Mark Akers drove in two runs with a pair of hits and Tony Maxey had fourth-inning two-run double as Shawsville crushed guest Craig County 12-1 in a non-district baseball game Tuesday.

Drew Smith improved to 2-0 with a four-hitter and five strikeouts. Johnny Crawford went 2-for-2 for the Rockets.

Shawsville is 2-1; Craig County is 0-3.

In other high school baseball:

At Pulaski, Lord Botetourt defeated Pulaski County 9-6 in the season opener for both teams. The teams were tied at 2 going into the seventh inning when the Cavaliers scored seven runs. The Cougars scored four runs and loaded the bases but failed to score again in the bottom of the seventh.

Shannon Williams had two hits and batted in three runs for Lord Botetourt. Teammate Matt Edwards was 5-for-5 with two hits, three walks and two runs. Donnie Meador had a single, a double and batted in one run for the Cavaliers.

At Northside, Mark Freeland struck out nine in five innings and Kelly Dampeer drove in two runs with a triple and sacrifice fly as Northside (1-0-1) edged Christiansburg 4-3 in a non-district game. Denny Self had three hits for the Demons (0-1).

At Forest, winning pitcher Mark Tyler cracked a grand slam to highlight a six-run fourth inning as Jefferson Forest cranked Nelson County 13-2. Ryan Gilleland had three hits and Vince Whorley added a two-run homer for the Cavaliers.

At Blacksburg, Salem outslugged Blacksburg 11-2 behind the home runs of Matt Burge, Tom Lee and Ryan Blevins. Burge's two-run homer in the third inning put the Spartans (2-0) out front 2-0. Blacksburg (0-1) tied it in the bottom of the inning, but Lee smashed a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to put Salem up for good. Blevins then hit a two-run shot in the sixth. Lee pitched the final four innings for the victory.

At Pearisburg, Kevin Briggs belted a two-run homer to lead Carroll County to a 6-5 victory over Giles. Jim Foley was the winning pitcher. Danny Ratcliffe and Matt McGuire had two hits each for Giles.

Chris Carr and Chris Jones combined to throw a no-hitter as William Byrd blanked Patrick Henry 11-0 in a non-district game at Byrd. John Bradberry, Kevin Saunders and Shannon Gray had two hits apiece for the Terriers (2-0).

\ SOFTBALL: Bobbi Jo Wright fanned 13 batters and defending state Group A champion Glenvar exploited two key errors to beat Parry McCluer in a Pioneer District-opening game at the Fighting Blues' park in Buena Vista. Carrie Coleman scattered six hits and struck out six for the Blues. Glenvar is 1-1 overall.

At Bedford, Kelly Witt was 4-for-4 with seven runs batted in to lead Liberty to a 20-2 Seminole District victory over Buckingham. Karla Goff struck out 10 in five innings of pitching for the Minettes (2-0, 2-0). Buckingham is 1-1, 1-1.

\ SOCCER: Franklin County's Jonathan Seale and Jeff Flora each scored goals before a late goal by Martinsville's Link Shaw and the Eagles went on to a 2-1 non-district boys' victory at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. Martinsville is 0-2. It was the Eagles' opener.

At Wytheville, Aaron Quinlan had a pair of goals to lead Pulaski County to a 3-1 boys' victory over George Wythe. Jason Bowles had the lone goal for the Maroons.

\ TRACK: Jadeen Curtis won the long jump, the high jump, the 100-meter hurdles, the triple jump, and the 300 hurdles as Radford won a dual track meet with host Glenvar. Trish Nervo of Glenvar won the 1,600 and set a Glenvar record in the 3,200 with a time of 12:59. Cathy Welford also set a Glenvar record with a discus toss of 84 feet, 2 inches.

Chad Wallace won the long jump, the 200 meters and the 400, Frank Harrison was victorious in the 1,600 and 3,200, and Ben Mehala won both hurdles as host Glenvar beat Radford 76-51 in a boys' meet. Dave Robinson had a 6-foot-2 high jump for Glenvar.
