ROGERS A RELIEF FOR BATH IN 6-4 BASEBALL VICTORY

Freshman Jon Rogers tossed 3 1/3 innings of relief, yielding one unearned run and two infield hits as Bath County defeated James River 6-4 in a Pioneer District baseball game on the Chargers' diamond in Hot Springs on Tuesday.

Rogers came in with the bases loaded in the second inning and struck out the first two batters he faced. He also squeezed across the winning runs when Bath County (1-0 overall, 1-0 Pioneer) trailed 4-3 in the fourth.

The game was called after five innings because of darkness.

James River (0-1, 0-1) had only two hits out of the infield and one earned run.

In other high school baseball:

Brant Engstrom drove in six runs on a double and a triple and was the winning pitcher as Fieldale-Collinsville drilled guest Martinsville 8-1 in a Piedmont District game. Engstrom struck out six and allowed three hits. Fieldale-Collinsville is 1-0. Martinsville is 0-1.

At Chatham, Chatham scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with two out and defeated Gretna 11-0. Jason Reece had a two-run triple and Bryan Phelps hit a two-run home run during the inning. Terrace Martin also batted in two runs for the Cavaliers (1-0). The Hawks are 0-2.

Gordon Howard had a three-run triple, Mark Akers drove in two runs with a pair of hits, and Tony Maxey had fourth-inning two-run double as Shawsville crushed guest Craig County 12-1 in a non-district game. Drew Smith improved to 2-0 with a four-hitter and five strikeouts. Johnny Crawford went 2-for-2 for the Rockets. Shawsville is 2-1; Craig County is 0-3.

At Pearisburg, Kevin Briggs belted a two-run homer to lead Carroll County to a 6-5 victory over Giles. Jim Foley was the winning pitcher. Danny Ratcliffe and Matt McGuire had two hits each for Giles.

At Covington, Greenbrier East of West Virginia gave up nine hits and 13 walks as Alleghany routed the Spartans 17-4. Nolan Caldwell pitched six innings, striking out six and giving up five hits for the Mountaineers (2-0). Greenbrier East is 0-1.

At City Stadium in Lynchburg, Kevin Vineyard, Chris Niedzwiecki and Robey Caldwell combined to pitch a one-hitter and struck out 11 as Cave Spring defeated E.C. Glass 6-0 in the non-district opener for both teams.

\ SOFTBALL: Bobbi Jo Wright fanned 13 batters and defending state Group A champion Glenvar exploited two key errors to beat Parry McCluer in a Pioneer District-opening game at the Fighting Blues' park in Buena Vista. Carrie Coleman scattered six hits and struck out six for the Blues. Glenvar is 1-1 overall.

\ SOCCER: Franklin County's Jonathan Seale and Jeff Flora each scored goals before a late goal by Martinsville's Link Shaw and the Eagles went on to a 2-1 non-district boys' victory at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. Martinsville is 0-2. It was the Eagles' opener.

At River's Edge, Justin Thompson scored three goals as Roanoke Catholic routed Massautten Military Academy 7-0 in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' match. Catholic (1-1, 1-0) outshot Massanutten 41-2.

At Buchanan, Lord Botetourt blanked James River 6-0 in a non-district match. Chris Keaton scored two goals to lead the Cavaliers. John Critzer had five saves and Brian Kosco three in goal. It was the first game for both teams.

\ TRACK: Jadeen Curtis won the long jump, the high jump, the 100-meter hurdles, the triple jump, and the 300 hurdles as Radford won a dual track meet with host Glenvar. Trish Nervo of Glenvar won the 1,600 and set a Glenvar record in the 3,200 with a time of 12:59. Cathy Welford also set a Glenvar record with a discus toss of 84 feet, 2 inches.

Chad Wallace won the long jump, the 200 meters and the 400, Frank Harrison was victorious in the 1,600 and 3,200, and Ben Mehala won both hurdles as host Glenvar beat Radford 76-51 in a boys' meet. Dave Robinson had a 6-foot-2 high jump for Glenvar.

\ LACROSSE: At Lexington, Robert Worrell scored four goals and assisted on three and Doug Hartog added three goals as Rockbridge County pummeled Cave Spring 14-0 in a non-district match. The Wildcats evened their record at 1-1.
