HANGING ROCK HIRES MCBRIDE

Billy McBride, former head professional at Countryside Golf Club, has been hired as the new head pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club.

McBride, who spent nine years at Countryside before resigning last week, signed a three-year contract with Hanging Rock on Monday, said Joe Thomas, one of the owners of the 18-month-old Roanoke County club.

"We were looking for somebody with experience at running a top-flight public golf club, as opposed to a private facility, and we felt Billy was the best man for that job," Thomas said. "We're very excited about getting a man of his experience and capabilities."

McBride, 51, was unavailable for comment Tuesday.

McBride, who served as head pro at three Lynchburg-area clubs before coming to Countryside in December 1983, succeeds K.C. Jones Jr., who resigned from the post two months ago.

McBride, who will begin his official duties on Jan. 15, likely will hire two assistant pros, Thomas said.
