FERRUM WOMEN ROMP

Ferrum used a full-court press to create 12 steals in the first 10 minutes and jumped to a 22-8 lead en route to an 87-61 women's victory Sunday over Hilbert College of New York in the third-place game of the North/South Tournament.

Nikki Claiborne, who led Ferrum with 22 points and 12 rebounds, was named to the all-tournament team. Sarah Quesenberry added 18 points and Latasha Randon 14 for the Panthers (3-7).

New Paltz (N.Y.) won the tournament with a 69-66 victory over Delaware Valley.

\ No. 7 Seton Hall 91, Providence 79: At Providence, R.I., Terry Dehere scored 28 points, including 24 in the first half, and the Pirates (13-1, 3-0) never trailed in breezing past the Friars (6-4, 0-3) in a Big East game.

\ Minnesota 81, No. 9 Purdue: At Minneapolis, Voshon Lenard, starting for the first time since a New Year's Eve injury, and Jayson Walton each scored 17 points to help the Gophers overpower the Boilermakers in the Big Ten Conference. The team's second straight victory in Big Ten play was the 200th career win for Minnesota coach Clem Haskins.

\ Ohio State 92, No. 8 Iowa 81: At Columbus, Ohio, freshman Greg Simpson came off the bench to score a career-high 23 points and the Buckeyes matched a school record with 11 3-pointers in upsetting the Hawkeyes.

\ No. 19 Connecticut 87, Villanova 80: At Villanova, Pa., Brian Fair scored 27 points and Donyell Marshall added 21 to lead the Huskies over the Warriors in the Big East.

\ No. 21 Syracuse 89, Miami 81: At Syracuse, N.Y., Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim won the 400th game of his career as the Orangemen ended a three-game losing streak by beating the Hurricanes in a Big East Conference game.

\ St. John's 85, No. 24 Pittsburgh 77: At New York, in a Big East Conference game, Lamont Middleton scored 20 points and St. John's made 13 of its last 14 free throws as the Redmen ended the Panthers' seven-game winning streak.

\ Ferrum 106, Shenandoah 96: At Winchester, Quincy Quick scored 29 points as the Panthers (8-3) beat the Hornets (4-8) in overtime. Ferrum led by 14, but Shenandoah battled back and tied the score at 87 with 25 seconds to go. Shenandoah hit a 3-pointer to take a 90-87 lead and with 18 seconds to go, Scarborough sank a 3-point goal to send the game into overtime.

\ N.C. Wilmington 83, Richmond 80: At Richmond, Darren Moore scored 22 points and hit four free throws in overtime to lead the Seahawks past the Spiders in the CAA opener for both. Kenny Wood led Richmond with 26.

\ Coastal Carolina 66, Liberty 65: At Lynchburg, Mike Doyle hit a pair of free throws to give Coastal Carolina an overtime victory in the Big South Conference over the Flames.

\ American 76, William and Mary 71: At Washington, Erick Lawrence's two free throws with 22 seconds left broke a 71-71 tie and led the Eagles to victory over the Tribe in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both. American broke a five-game losing streak.
