RICHARD LEE BURTON has received the highest award of the Boys Scouts of America - the Eagle - at Green Valley United Methodist Church.

Burton became a scout in January 1989. He has held every position in Troop 265 of Giles County, including that of senior patrol leader.

He was "tapped out" and inducted into the Order of the Arrow in 1991.

He has earned 21 merit badges and 10 skill awards.

For his Eagle project, Burton planned and supervised the placement of two flagpoles at Green Valley United Methodist Church.

He passed the board of review on Sept. 20.

Burton, the son of Johnny Burton and stepson of Wanda Burton of Eggleston, graduated from Giles High School in June and joined the Air Force.

He is stationed in Nebraska.

Burton, is the 12th Eagle Scout in the 16-year history of Troop 265.

\ STEVE CRIDER of Blacksburg is one of several Virginians taking part in a program on rural health sponsored by East Tennessee State University.

The Community Partnerships Program is an interdisciplinary rural-based training experience for medical, nursing and health students.

"I wanted to work in a rural underserved area and ETSU was the only medical school program that focuses on rural health," said Crider, who left a teaching position at Virginia Tech's College of Engineering to attend medical school.

Crider won the Virginia Medical Scholarship Award.

He received a scholarship to pay his medical school tuition and will return to Virginia after graduation to become a primary-care doctor in an under-served county.

\ DAN LEVEL has been appointed blood services chairman for the Giles County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

\ SALLIE GROGAN is volunteer coordinator for the Giles County chapter.

\ RUBY MURLEY of the Mountain View Garden Club recently appointed EDNA BLUME chairman of the 1993 nominating committee.

Blue ribbons for artistic design have been awarded to the following members of the Southside Garden Club: MRS. BLOKKER, MRS. R.W. HENDRICKS, MRS. LUDWIG, Mrs. JOHN MUENCH and MRS. R. L. SIMPSON. MRS. LUDWIG and MRS. JERALD ROBINSON won blue ribbons for horticulture.
