BOARD-ELECTION PETITION DRIVE GOING `REAL WELL'

A leader of the petition drive to get an elected school board on the ballot in Montgomery County says the effort is going "real well."

Lynn Linkous of Christiansburg said her conservative estimate is that 2,000 people have signed petitions calling for a referendum this fall.

Linkous and her husband, Danny, and five other couples - supporters of Christian names for school holidays - began circulating the petitions early this month.

They were motivated, Linkous said, by a feeling that they lack a voice in the county school system.

Getting the issue placed on the fall ballot requires supporters of an elected school board to secure the names 2,928 registered voters on the petitions. That's 10 percent of all registered voters in the county.

To ensure that enough of those signing the petitions are registered voters, Linkous said her group is shooting for 4,500 names.

Linkous said the names would be turned over to county Registrar Sandra Chapin by July 1 for verification. The petitions must be presented to the circuit court by Aug. 4 to get on the Nov. 2 ballot.
