OBIT LOVELACE, MATTIE WHISNANT

LOVELACE, Mattie Whisnant, 93, of Henrietta, N.C., died January 21, 1993 at the Rutherford Hospital. She was a native of Rutherford County, daughter of the late Dr. James Fletcher and Sophia Jane Willis Whisnant. She was the widow of Dr. Thomas Claude Lovelace. She was a homemaker and a charter member of the Temple Baptist Church in Henrietta, N.C., where she served as church treasurer for 31 years and taught Sunday School for many years. She also served as WMU President of the Sandy Run Association for several terms and was a charter member of the N.C. Federation of Womens Club. She was a graduate of Davenport Preparatory School and Davenport College. She did post graduate studies at Columbia University in New York City. She taught at Davenport Preparatory School for three years prior to her marriage to Dr. Thomas C. Lovelace in 1922. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Barney F. (Jane) Timmons, Hartsville, S.C. and Mrs. James E. (Carolyn) Wheless, Roanoke; two sisters, Miss Ostine Whisnant, Fletcher, N.C. and Mrs. Lois W. Marriott, Henrietta, N.C.; four grandchildren, Mrs. Jane T. Levinson, Mrs. Martha T. Fedell, Dr. James E. Wheless Jr. and Mrs. Carol W. Weathers; six great-grandchildren, Ryan Fedell, Robert Fedell, Jason Fedell, James Allen Weathers, Ashley Lovelace Weathers and James E. Wheless III. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, N.C. with the Rev. Harold Mason, the Rev. Jerry Brooks, the Rev. Broughton Strickland and the Rev. L.W. Cain officiating. Burial will be in the High Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at Harrelson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Lovelace Scholarship Fund for practical nursing students at Isothermal Community College, PO Box 804, Spindale, N.C. 28160 or to the Temple Baptist Church, PO Box 368, Henrietta, N.C. 28076.
