ALLEGHANY BEATS SUTBBORN BOTETOURT

Michael Hunter had 24 points and Alleghany seized control in the third quarter Friday night to defeat Lord Botetourt 52-47 in a Blue Ridge District boys' basketball game.

The Mountaineers (11-1 overall, 2-1 district) trailed 30-25 at halftime but outscored the Cavaliers 17-7 in the third quarter to take the lead.

Lord Botetourt (4-7, 0-3) trailed 48-47 with less than a minute to play, but Hunter and Todd Wheatley made two free throws each to seal the victory.

Hunter was scoreless in the first quarter but scored 11 of Alleghany's 18 points in the second quarter.

Alleghany turned the game around in the second half, holding Lord Botetourt to three field goals in the final two quarters. Ryan Salvi led the Cavaliers with 14 points and Jeff Cronise added 12.

Lord Botetourt made only 10 of 20 free throws. \

HOT SPRINGS - Covington's big second quarter, when the Cougars outscored the Chargers 24-12, proved to be the difference in the Pioneer District battle.

The Cougars (6-5, 4-1) were led by Van Wallace with 24 points. Bath County (6-8, 2-3) got 17 from Mike Reese. \

BLAND - Terry Millirons led three Eagles in double figures with 15 points as Auburn (8-5, 6-4) won a sloppy Mountain Empire District game.

Todd Collins had 11 points and Bradley Hugdins chipped in 10 for the Eagles, who led 32-21 after three quarters.

Bland (7-5, 6-5) got 10 points apiece from Brad Harden and Jes Selfe. \

Galax 70

Narrows 51

GALAX - Jeff Spells dominated with 32 points and 18 rebounds as the Maroon Tide whipped Narrows in a Mountain Empire District game.

Galax (8-2, 7-1) led by seven points at halftime and surged ahead in the third quarter. The Maroon Tide led by 28 points at one time.

Wilbert Campbell added 23 points for Galax.

Narrows (5-6, 4-5) got 19 points from Chad Fleeman and 16 from Anthony Wiley. \

INDEPENDENCE - The Blue Devils made eight of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter as they beat the Shawnees in the Mountain Empire District.

Grayson County came out strong, taking a 8-0 lead. Shawsville (2-11, 1-9) stayed close but never led.

Shane Widener led the Blue Devils (8-3, 7-1) with 10 points. Mike Roop scored 13 points to lead the Shawnees. \

MARTINSVILLE - The Lancers scored several easy baskets off of Bassett turnovers in romping to the Piedmont District victory.

Laurel Park (13-0, 11-0) also held a 41-23 rebounding advantage.

Four Lancers scored in double figures, led by Lonzy Robertson's 31 points. Art Wade scored 32 for the Bengals (3-10, 3-8). \

KENTUCK - Maurice Spencer and Vincent Eggleston had 18 points apiece for the Bulldogs (11-2, 9-2) in the Piedmont District victory. Brian Gunn led all scorers with 22 points for Dan River (4-10, 3-8). \

STUART - The Warriors went to a zone in the third quarter and cooled off Patrick County's Chris Reynolds, who still finished with a game-high 29 points.

Reynolds had 21 points at halftime, at which point the Cougars (3-10, 1-10) trailed 37-32. Magna Vista then stretched its lead to 63-47 after three quarters.

Marcus Toney led the Warriors (8-4, 8-3) with 25 points. Mack Inge added 13. \

COLLINSVILLE - Senior forward Lemuel Jones had game highs of 16 points and 17 rebounds as the Cavaliers withstood a second-half Hawks rally to raise their record to 9-4, 7-4 in Piedmont District play.

Gretna trailed 42-25 at the half but cut the deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter. William Merritt and Jason Tucker had 15 points apiece for the Hawks (1-12, 1-10).

Fieldale-Collinsville, which had four scorers in double figures, sank nine of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter. Thad Wade had 15 points, Kerwin Hairston 13 and Ben Seay 12 for the Cavaliers. \

DRY FORK - Khris Law went over 1,000 points for his career and won a scoring duel with Lavelton Pope as the Trojans won a Piedmont District game.

Law, a junior, pumped in 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Tunstall (9-5, 7-4). Hubert Adkins added 21 points and nine rebounds, and Chris Walton had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Law went over 1,000 points on his first shot of the game. He now had 1,030 for his career.

Pope led Chatham (5-8, 5-6) by firing in 27 points. Ben Wright added 16, Theo Jones had 11 and Rodney Williams 10 for the Cavaliers. \

Gate City 68

MARION - Cold first-half shooting and a rebounding deficiency proved to much for the Scarlet Hurricane to overcome in a Highlands District loss to the Blue Devils.

Gate City led 30-17 at the half, primarily because Marion made five of 17 field-goal attempts to the Blue Devils' 12-of-23. The Hurricane (6-7, 1-4) cut the deficit to six early in the third quarter, but Gate City's transition game boosted the lead back up into double figures.

The bigger Blue Devils (10-2, 3-2) outrebounded Marion 37-22, and the Hurricane also was cold from the free-throw line, making 10 of 24 attempts.

Scotty Vermillion led Gate City with 15 points. Brian Cregger had 14 for Marion. \

Lebanon 69

CHRISTIANSBURG - Ben Campbell and Aaron Fuller combined for 39 points as the Pioneers rolled past the Crusaders to stay undefeated in the Hogoheegee District.

Lebanon (8-2, 8-0) took an early lead, outscoring George Wythe 20-10. The Crusaders used a press to cut the lead to six at halftime, but never took the lead.

Brian Summers scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Brian Sword added 14 to pace the Pioneers.

Aaron Black had 16 points and Tracy Brown scored 13 to lead George Wythe (5-7, 3-3). \

Chilhowie 83

DAMASCUS - Tim Polk tossed in 23 points and D.J. Preston and Shane Olinger added 18 each as the Warriors kept the Cavaliers winless in the Hogoheegee District.

Baron Yarber had 23 for Holston (1-11, 0-8). Chilhowie is 7-5, 4-4. \

Rural Retreat 58 RURAL RETREAT - Marty Halloway's 19 points led the Blue

Devils past the Indians in the Hogoheegee District game.

O.J. Williams contributed 15 points and Skip Proffitt 12 for Castlewood (5-6, 4-3), which led 42-23 at halftime and cruised.

Stephen Pratt paced Rural Retreat (2-9, 2-4) with 16 points. \

WOODSTOCK - Chris Hicks scored a career-high 31 points as the hot-shooting Indians walloped the Colonels.

Hicks canned six of the Indians' 12 3-pointers. Donnie Costigan added 21 points and George Wood 19 for Boys Home (7-5).

Jeff Walton led Massanutten (1-4) with 22 points. \
