Union accusations delay Trailer Co. vote

ATKINS - A scheduled vote Thursday for about 400 employees of Utility Trailer Corp. on representation by the United Steel Workers has been postponed. The delay was caused by eight unfair-labor-practice charges filed by the union.

The Winston-Salem, N.C., regional office of the National Labor Relations Board will investigate. The election may be rescheduled, depending on the board's action. The union accused the company of discriminating against workers who support the union, said Ron Yost of the NLRB.

The company made "a lot of threats and isolated union supporters in the plant," said Jim Cunningham, a union organizer. - Staff report

Marc Raskin, automotive maintenance manager for Kroger's Mid-Atlantic Marketing office in Roanoke, will inspect the first tractor as it leaves the assembly line Friday, the food company said.

This is the fourth year the Cincinnati-based Kroger's southeastern and midwestern areas have awarded a tractor contract to the Pulaski County plant.
