AVEDON PHOTOS FEATURED IN SHOW

An exhibition of 69 of Richard Avedon's "The Family 1976" portraits made for Rolling Stone magazine is on show at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery.

The gallery says this is the first time since 1976 that a full set of the photos has been shown publicly. The magazine commissioned Avedon to shoot a series on the 1976 presidential primary candidates that the photographer expanded into a series on power in America.

The photographs, from the Portrait Gallery's own collection, include people who shaped policy and opinion, from Melvin Laird wearing a "Ford 1976" tie to a smiling Bella Abzug.

Also on view at the gallery will be another collection of 58 distinguished portrait photos, dating from 1850 to 1972. Among them are portraits of Jackson Pollock by Hans Namuth, of Edith Gregor Halpert by Man Ray and of Lee Krasner by Irving Penn, as well as self-portraits by Eadweard Muybridge and Ansel Adams.

The exhibitions are respectively titled "The Family 1976: Richard Avedon's Portraits for Rolling Stone" and "The Telling Image: Portrait Photogrtaphs from the Archives of American art." Both will be on display through June 6.
