Wilder hits airwaves for crime-control Q&A

Gov. Doug Wilder will answer questions on a statewide radio call-in program Friday on WVTF (89.1 FM) about his anti-crime initiatives before the General Assembly.

Listeners can call (800) 233-9782 and reach Wilder with questions beginning after the 9 a.m. newscast. The one-hour show will be fed by satellite from WRVA in Richmond to affiliates of the Virginia News Network.

VNN's Capitol correspondent Mo Donaldson and WRVA's Tim Timberlake will host the show that ends at 10 a.m.

Future of S. Africa symposium at Va. Tech

Virginia Tech hosts a symposium titled "The Future of South Africa" on Feb. 16 in Haymarket Auditorium in Tech's Squires Student Center.

The one-day event will feature three sessions, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 10 p.m.

Randall Robinson, executive director of TransAfrica of Washington, D.C., will deliver the keynote address. Other speakers include Paul Jacobs, officer of cultural affairs with the South Africa Embassy in Washington D.C.; Lindiwe Mabuza, chief representative of the African National Congress Mission to the United States; S.E.M. Pheko, chief representative of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, Observer Mission to the United Nations; Sipho Mzimela, chief representative to the U.S. from the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Robert Fatton, from the University of Virginia's department of government and foreign affairs.

Time for questions and comments and panelist presentations is made in all sessions.

Science museum's winter class deadline

The last day to register for early science education classes at Roanoke's Science Museum of Western Virginia is Monday for the winter session and March 29 for the spring session.

The six-week classes will run from mid-February through the end of March and from late April through the end of May.

A "Tot 'n Parent" class for children 2-3 and a parent or caregiver and a pre-kindergartener class will meet weekly during each session. The fee for each class is $80.
