TRIBUTE FOR HAGLER CANCELED

A tribute to former middleweight champion Marvin Hagler was canceled Wednesday after a newspaper brought to light details of an assault by the boxer on a former girlfriend.

Hagler, formerly of Brockton, Mass., pleaded guilty in Boston Municipal Count in December 1991 to assaulting Lisa Pilagonia of Revere. Hagler was placed on probation and ordered to do 100 hours of community service.

Fight Night II, a fund-raising dinner scheduled for Feb. 26 in Boston, was to have featured a World Boxing Council Tribute to Hagler.

But the Association for Commercial Real Estate, the event's sponsor, announced late Wednesday that that particular segment of the dinner would be canceled.

David Begelfer, Massachusetts' executive director of the association, said the action came as a result of a column that appeared in Wednesday's Boston Globe. In other boxing:
