OBIT WILLIAMS, COL. FRANK MAXWELL

WILLIAMS, Col. Frank Maxwell, (U.S. Air Force Retired) 83, of Lexington, died February 2, 1993. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 6, 1909, he was the son of Robert L. and Ida Pittman Williams. He was educated in the primary and secondary schools of Philadelphia, Pa. and Detroit, Mich. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and was graduated in June 1930 with a bachelor of arts degree and commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in the Army of the United States. He attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and received a degree of master of business administration. Col. Williams served with the 3rd and 5th Field Artillery Units of the U. S. Army from 1931 through 1937. After transfer to the Air Corps, U. S. Army and after completion of flying school, he was assigned to the 9th Bomb Group at Mitchell Field in New York. From 1941 to 1945, the war years, he was assigned to the Army Air Forces and 8th Air Force Bomber Command in England. After World War II, he served in the United States Air Force, 3rd Division in England, the Standing Group of the Military Committee of the United Nations. The last five years of his service was at the Headquarters of the Strategic Air Command at Omaha, Nebraska. He retired from active service on April 30, 1961. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Valor, and Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Subsequent to his retirement, he had a career in the construction business in Sarasota, Fla. area. He was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church, the Lexington Golf and Country Club, the Commonwealth Club and the Engineers Club of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Davis Williams, and is survived by his wife, Mary Daniel Williams. He is also survived by four stepsons, Marion A. Steele of Marietta, Ga., John D. Steele of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Robert S. Steele II of Virginia Beach, Va., and R. Daniel Booton of Richmond, Va.; and one stepdaughter, Ann B. Currie of Union, S. C. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 5, 1993, at 11 a.m. at Jackson Memorial Hall, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va. Interment will be at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Va. Dr. L. Randolph Harrison, Dr. Thomas W. Currie and Chaplain Charles Caudill will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington.
