WILDER FOCUSING ON IMPORTANT ISSUES

GOV. WILDER gladly accepts the Roanoke Times & World-News' editorial call (in "Gov. Wilder's morass," Jan. 9) to focus on the issues of vital importance to Virginia, and appreciates your support of his anti-violent-crime package.

Rehashing the differences we have with the harsh, sweeping condemnations found in that editorial would be counterproductive, and so I would ask that we simply try to put aside our differences for the time being and focus on reducing crime, maintaining government standards and reforming our welfare system in Virginia.

After Gov. Wilder leaves office, there will be plenty of time for examining the personalities and mini-dramas that have so obsessed the Virginia media for three years. Gov. Wilder's attention is focused not on the feelings of the press, next year's elections or the tides of public opinion, but on working with the General Assembly to improve the lives of all Virginians.
