BASKETBALL-COUGARS KNOCK OFF FLOYD COUNTY
At Covington, Chuck Morris broke a 46-46 tie with 3:32 remaining and the Covington went on to beat Floyd County 57-48 as the Cougars scored 11 of the non-district game's last 16 points Wednesday night. Covington (7-7), which trailed by 10 points in the first half, was led by Keeno Jones with 20 points and Van Wallace with 14. \At Rocky Mount on Thursday, Mike Preston scored 32 points, including two 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds with the second one coming from halfcourt at the buzzer, as Heritage nipped Franklin County 71-68, the final score being the only time the Pioneers led all night.
Preston finished with nine 3-pointers, including five in the fourth quarter against a variety of defenses.
Franklin County (9-6) started out with the lead on two technical free throws because Heritage players were dunking in pregame. The score was tied at 60 and at 68, and the Eagles led the rest of the way except for the final score. Tremayne McHeimer paced the Eagles with 21. \
