BLUE DEMONS TOPPLE RADFORD IN NEW RIVER

Robbie Gillenwater scored 17 points and John Hairston added 14 as Christiansburg defeated Radford 57-47 in a New River District boys' basketball game Friday night.

With the Demons (3-18 overall, 2-4 New River) leading by three points at halftime, Gillenwater went on a run, scoring eight points as his team outscored the Bobcats 10-6 in the third quarter. Hairston followed suit in the fourth, scoring 10 of Christiansburg's points.

Garrett Jones led Radford (7-14, 2-4) with 15 points. Chris Smith had 12.

Galax 44

GALAX - The Spartans made 14 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the Mountain Emprie District upset. The loss tumbled the Maroon Tide (13-7, 12-6) from third to a tie for fourth in the league standings. Mitch Reed led Giles (8-12, 7-11) with 15 points, and Shane Brim paced Galax with 10.

MAX MEADOWS - Steve Widner scored 21 points and the Pioneers held off a second-half surge by the Blue Devils to win a Mountain Empire District game.

Fort Chiswell (15-5, 13-5) led 45-27 at halftime but let that lead dwindle to 10 points by the end of the third quarter. The Blue Devils (16-5, 15-3) outscored the Pioneers 26-23 to close out the game but came up short.

Mitch Hawks led Grayson County with 34 points, including six 3-pointers. Keith Weatherman added 11 points and Mike Brown 10.

Matt Chumbley scored 19 points and B.W. Hill 15 for the Pioneers. \

Rocky Gap 48

FLOYD - Eleven of the Buffaloes scored as they routed the Eagles for a Mountain Empire District win.

Jason Light led Floyd County (14-6, 14-4) with 14 points and six blocked shots. Mike Hylton scored 12 points and Chris Bond added 11. Landon Conner grabbed eight rebounds.

Frank Nunley of Rocky Gap (1-18, 1-17) led all scorers with 18 points.

SHAWSVILLE - The Shawnees, with only sophomores on their six-player roster, were on the verge of a colossal upset before falling victim to a full-court press in the second half of the Mountain Empire District game.

The Rockets trailed 25-24 before outscoring Shawsville 26-8 in the third quarter. Bland (11-9, 9-9) was led by David Lambert with 22 points and Brad Harden with 16.

Darrell Bibb had a career-high 24 points, 16 in the first half, for Shawsville (2-19, 1-18). Andy Smith added 14 for the Shawnees, who were 12-of-30 at the free-throw line. \

Liberty 78

BEDFORD - The Minutemen gave the Colonels fits before being outscored 27-14 in the fourth quarter of the Seminole District game.

Liberty (9-11, 9-11) led 62-57 with 1:30 left in the third before Mark Johnson nailed a pair of 3-pointers to help give Altavista (17-3, 17-3) a 66-64 lead going into the fourth.

Led by Sherman Pannell's 13 points, the Colonels dominated the fourth quarter to pull away.

Pannell finished with a game-high 31 points and Johnson had 21. Jerry Padgett led Liberty with 23 points and David Ross had 18. \

Jefferson Forest 75

Staunton River 65

Bryan Jennings scored 20 points and Thomas Sweeney added 18 as the Cavaliers rolled past the Golden Eagles.

Jefferson Forest (12-8, 12-8) led 31-29 at halftime and outscored Staunton River 23-17 in the fourth quarter to capture the Seminole District win.

Ryan Gilleland paced the Cavaliers with 15 points.

Mike Williams scored 18 points, including a school-record six 3-pointers for a career total of 48, to lead Staunton River (9-11, 9-11). Cornelius Fox scored 15 points, Eric Flood had 13 and Geoff Zimmerman had 10. \

Auburn 83

Narrows 74

RINER - Andy Johnson, Terry Millirons and Jon Reed scored 18 points each as the Eagles rolled over the Green Wave for a Mountain Empire District win.

Narrows (7-13, 6-12) jumped to a 25-8 lead in the first quarter and led 44-32 at halftime. Auburn rallied in the second half, outscoring the Green Wave 23-14 in the third quarter and 28-16 in the fourth.

Millirons grabbed 13 rebounds and Brad Hudgins scored 13 points and had 12 assists for the Eagles (14-7, 12-6). Chad Fleeman led Narrows with 29 points.

Stanleytown Christian 57

The top-seeded Crusaders (13-1) knocked off fourth-seed Stanleytown Christian in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Christian Schools tournament at Lakeside Baptist Church in Roanoke.

David Arthur had 19 to lead Gateway Christian, which plays the winner of the Temple Christian-Granite Christian game today at 1 p.m. \

Jody Hallett scored 14 points and Kara Buckner added 10 as the Cougars ran past the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Pulaski County (13-8, 9-3) led 21-20 at halftime, but outscored Franklin County 8-4 in the third quarter and 13-10 in the fourth to capture the win.

Patricia Campbell scored 10 points to lead the Eagles (9-8, 4-8). \
