TEACHER OF THE WEEK

Two of the things Marilyn Bowman likes best are travel and teaching. Her Radford classroom is the perfect place for the 21-year teaching veteran to relate her experiences from around the world.

"I share my life with my pupils," said Bowman. "I bring in lots of extra things like pictures and rock collections from Africa."

Going hand-in-hand with her fondness for travel is Bowman's love of history, especially Virginia history. "We have more history than any other state. I want the children to be proud of their heritage," she said.

"Mrs. Bowman is a great teacher. She is a bright and happy person," said the pupil who nominated her. Bowman said she likes teaching fourth-graders because of their curiosity and independence. "They haven't tuned you out yet," she said. "They are focused on their work,"

The Roanoke native is married, the mother of three grown children and the grandmother of a 2-year-old. In addition to travel, she enjoys gardening, dogs and reading.

If you have a nomination for Teacher of the Week, send the name of the nominee, his or her school and why you think that teacher should be honored. Include your name, telephone number and school and send to NewsFun, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke 24010-2491.
