28 PERCENT OF BIRTHS TO SINGLE MOTHERS

Murphy Brown has plenty of company.

A government health agency reported Thursday that the number of births to unmarried mothers hit a record high in 1990 of 1,165,384.

That was up 7 percent in a year and 75 percent over the decade, with more than one child in four - 28 percent - born to unmarried women.

The National Center for Health Statistics said there were almost 4.2 million births in 1990, more than in any year since 1962 when the post-World War II baby boom was drawing to a close.

But the agency said provisional data for 1991 and 1992 show a slight drop in births to about 4.1 million, "reflecting the aging of the baby boom women and fewer women in their 20s, the peak childbearing years."
