NORTH CROSS WINS VIC

In Lynchburg, Mike Bryan scored 24 points and Marcus Cardwell added 19 as the North Cross Raiders romped over Hargrave 87-60 to capture the Virginia Independent Conference championship in boys' basketball at Lynchburg College on Saturday night.

The Tigers led 19-16 in the first quarter, but the Raiders outscored Hargrave 29-11 in the second quarter and 23-12 in the third as they coasted to the win. Cardwell scored 12 points and Bryan had nine in the second quarter. Cardwell had five steals and 11 assists for North Cross (23-6). Hal Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds.

Inus Norville led Hargrave with 25 points and the Tigers finished 16-5.

Tyler Pugh and Montie Smith were named to the all-tournament team. Cardwell was named most valuable player.

In the semifinal games, Hargrave defeated Fishburne Military 78-76 and North Cross rolled past Holy Cross 80-72. Smith led all scorers with 21 points, Cardwell had 18 points and 13 assists and Mike Bryan had 13 points and 14 rebounds. \

Mountain Empire

\ Galax 71, Narrows 55: Jeff Spells had 19 points to lead the No. 5 seeded Maroon Tide past the eighth-seeded Green Wave. Patrick Bailey had 19 for Narrows (9-14), which knocked off Grayson County in the opening round.

Galax (15-7) will play Floyd County for the championship and regional berth Monday night at Christiansburg.

\ Floyd County 54, Bland 32: Jason Light had a game-high 21 points as the No. 2 seeded Buffaloes eliminated the No. 6 seeded Rockets. Light added 25 rebounds, five blocks and four steals for Floyd County (16-6). David Lambert led Bland (12-10) with 16. \

Piedmont

\ Tunstall 66, Laurel Park 65: In Bassett, Khris Law scored 30 points as Tunstall knocked off the top-seeded Lancers in the Piedmont District semifinals.

The Lancers are the top-ranked team in the latest Group A Associated Press high school poll. The Trojans outscored the Lancers 13-9 in the fourth quarter to win.

Even with the loss, Laurel Park still advances into Region III competition as the top seed from the district. The Lancers will face the Seminole District runner-up on Wednesday. \

Martinsville 58, Magna Vista 53: In Bassett, Maurice Spencer scored 18 points, including four of five free throws in the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs beat the Warriors. \

Pioneer

\ Bath County 57, Glenvar 50: The fifth-seeded Chargers were 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the last 1:45 and upset the top-seeded Highlanders in the second round of the tournament at Lord Botetourt high school.

Matt Sherard had 16 points for Bath County (12-11), which plays Covington, a 61-49 victor over Parry McCluer.

The game was nip-and-tuck throughout until Bath County managed a four-point lead in the fourth quarter. Jason Anderson, who had 25 for Glenvar (15-7), hit a 3-pointer that cut it to 47-46 with 3:12 left. Then the Chargers went on their free-throw run, with Craig Phillips hitting two with 48 seconds left and Lee Phillips adding two more with 19 seconds remaining. \
