TRACK-LYNCHBURG WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP

The Lynchburg men's team won nine events as the Hornets captured their fourth straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference indoor title on Saturday in Lexington.

Lynchburg finished with 187 points followed by Bridgewater with 111 and Washington and Lee with 99. Roanoke finished fourth with 18 points.

Joe Bedard led the Hornets with two first-place finishes and a second- and third-place finish. He jumped 21 feet, 10 inches in the long jump and pole vaulted 13-6. He was second in the triple jump and third in the high jump.

James Maybury of Roanoke placed fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:14.8) and the 3,000 meters (9:22.0) and teammate Matt Montgomery was fourth in the 400-meter dash (52.2).

Bedard was named track athlete of the year and his coach, Jack Toms was named coach of the year.

In the women's meet, Josephine Schaeffer of Washington and Lee won 1,500 meters in 4:04 and the 3,000 in 10.23 as the Generals won the meet. Schaeffer anchored a winning relay team and teammate Sarah Gilbert anchored two winning relay teams and won the high and long jumps.

The Roanoke women's team finished third. Top finishes for the Maroons included Lynn Schwehr's second-place finish in the women's 1,500 meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 14 seconds.
