JMU TOPS PATRIOTS, CLINCHES CAA TITLE

William Davis, making a rare start, scored 18 points and James Madison wrapped up another Colonial Athletic Association regular-season basketball title on Saturday with a 75-59 victory over George Mason.

The Dukes (19-7 overall, 11-3 CAA) has either won or tied for the league's regular-season title the past four years. In that span, the Dukes have won 46 of their 56 CAA games.

George Mason (7-20, 2-12) will play James Madison in the first round of the conference tournament next Saturday. The Dukes have beaten the Patriots twice this season. \

WASHINGTON - Eugene Burroughs scored seven of his 16 points in a 14-2 second-half run to lead the Spiders past the Eagles.

After Brian Gilgeous made a 3-point basket to pull the Eagles to 42-41 with 12:47 remaining, Richmond (14-11, 10-4) scored the next 11 points to open a 53-41.

American (9-16, 6-8) cut the deficit to 63-61 on a basket by Gilgeous with 29 seconds left. The teams then traded a pair of baskets before Eugene Burroughs and Gerald Jarmon each sank a pair of free throws in the final 11 seconds to put the game away for the Spiders. \

NORFOLK - Keith Jackson scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half as the Rams defeated the Tribe in a CAA game.

William and Mary (14-12, 6-8) tied it at 59 on a 3-pointer by Matt Verkey with 10:52 remaining, but the Monarchs (19-6, 11-6) gradually pulled away. Kevin Swann had six points and Jackson three as the Monarchs stretched it to 76-62 with 4:09 remaining on jumper by Mario Mullen. \

AMHERST, N.Y. - Sherron Mills had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Rams (17-7) to a victory over the Bulls (5-21). \

CIAA\ Virginia Union 67, North Carolina Central 61: At Richmond, Troy Phillips scored 15 points and the Panthers won their second straight championship with a victory over the Eagles (24-3). The victory gave top-seeded Virginia Union (26-2), defending Division II champion, an automatic berth into this year's national tournament.

\ Christopher Newport 74, North Carolina Wesleyan 69: At Newport News, Steve Artis had 22 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and six steals as the Captains (22-4) captured their fifth Dixie championship in eight years and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
