AUTHOR TO LECTURE IN RICHMOND

Award-winning author Virginia Hamilton will give the 24th annual May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.

The lecture was established in 1969 in honor of May Arbuthnot, author of "Children and Books" and co-author of the Curriculum Foundation Readers, better known as the "Dick and Jane" series.

Hamilton's works include "Sweet Whispers," "Brother Rush" and "The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales."

She was the first black American woman to win the Newberry Award, for "M.C. Higgins the Great." Hamilton has also been the recipient of the National Book, Coretta Scott King and Edgar Allan Poe awards.

The lecture is free. A book signing and reception will follow. For information, call Beverly Bagan at the Virginia Center for the Book, (804) 371-6493.
