Steam train excursions scheduled

The Watauga Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) will sponsor two steam train excursions from Kingsport, Tenn., this spring.

On May 1 at 8 a.m., steam locomotive No. 4501 will pull out of Kingsport and head to Appalachia, through Moccasin Gap and Natural Tunnel State Park. The train will arrive in Appalachia at 11:45 a.m. and return to Kingsport at 6:15 p.m.

The train will depart Kingsport on May 2 at 7:30 a.m. and head to Richlands, passing through many tunnels, including one of the longest on the Clinchfield line, the Clinch Mountain Tunnel. The train will arrive in Richlands at 11:45 a.m. and return to Kingsport at 7 p.m.

Tickets for each trip cost $62. A meal in the dining car is available for $12, or a box lunch costs $6. Tickets may be purchased by writing Watauga Valley Chapter NRHS at P.O. Box 432, Johnson City, Tenn., 37605-0432. Or charge by calling (615) 753-5797.

Book signing

William Fintel and Gerald McDermott will sign copies of their book, "Living with Cancer," on Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Roanoke College in Salem.

Fintel is an oncologist at the Lewis-Gale Cancer Center. McDermott is a religion professor at Roanoke College.

The book signing will be held in Fintel Library.

Mushroom festival

The second annual Appalachian Mushroom Festival will be held April 17-18 at Simeon Vineyards near Charlottesville.

On April 18 a cooking contest between chefs from five Virginia restaurants will feature dishes with shiitake and other exotic mushrooms.

The festival will also feature the sampling of foods made with mushrooms, tastings of Virginia wines, winery tours and demonstrations, mushroom growing, live music and entertainment.

Admission for adults, including the wine tasting is $10. Regular admission without wine is $5. Children ages two to 12 will get a free balloon and face painting for a $3 admission. Children under two will be admitted free.
