EX-VMI FOOTBALL STAR DIES AT 71

Joe Muha, one of the most illustrious football players in VMI history, died Tuesday at his home in Hemet, Calif., after a short illness. He was 71.

Muha, an All-Southern Conference back in 1942, later played with the Philadelphia Eagles as a punter, linebacker and place-kicker and in 1948 led the National Football League in punting with a 47.3-yard average.

He was an assistant coach at Southern Cal from 1951-54 before spending one season as an assistant with the Chicago Cardinals. After that, he was an NFL field official for 15 years.

Muha, an all-state fullback for three years at VMI, was captain of the Gray squad in the 1942 Blue-Gray Game in Montgomery, Ala. He was a charter member of the VMI sports hall of fame formed in 1942.

Muha had lived in California since 1944, the last eight years in Hemet.

Muha is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen; two sons, John of Seattle and Edward of San Anselmo, Calif.; a daughter, Priscilla Muha of Indianapolis; a brother, two sisters and four granddaughters.
