700,000 KUWAITI CLAIMS FILED IN IRAQ INVASION

Victims of Iraq's seven-month occupation of Kuwait have filed more then 700,000 claims for damages, losses and suffering, U.N. officials said Thursday.

The U.N. Compensation Commission expects more than 1 million claims will be filed before the June 30 deadline, totaling an estimated $100 billion total, said the commission chairman, Ambassador Fernando Valenzuela Marzo of Spain.

He announced the appointment of a panel of nine jurists to begin reviewing individual claims and recommending awards.
