Chili Cookoff

Applications are available for the 1993 Virginia Championship Chili Cookoff, which will be held May 1 on the Roanoke City Market.

To enter, cooks must provide their own ingredients (beans, pasta and rice products are unacceptable); have their own camp-style stoves and suitable covering for cooking areas; and be members of the International Chili Society or have applied for membership at the time of competition.

The winner will receive airline tickets and accommodations for two at the World Championship Chili Cookoff on Oct. 2 and 3 in Reno, Nev.

Trophies will be awarded to four runners-up winners and for best booth decorations, showmanship and people's choice.

Steam excursions

Norfolk Southern launched its 27th year of steam train excursions with a round trip on Saturday and today from Birmingham, Ala., to Chattanooga, Tenn.

Until mid-November Norfolk Southern plans 47 trips in parts of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The excursions will be sponsored by local chapters of the National Railway Historical Society and by railroad clubs and museums. Most will be powered by the N&W streamlined steam locomotive 611.
