ROCKBRIDGE NIPS COVINGTON IN BASEBALL

Rockbridge County's Greg Stubblefield drove in the winning run with an infield hit as the Wildcats beat Covington 5-4 in a non-district baseball game Tuesday.

Kevin Staton's single scored Kevin Alestock to tie it at 4 with one out in the seventh. One out later, with runners on second and third, Stubblefield singled to third base and Staton scored. Rockbridge County is 4-0.

In other baseball:

At New Castle, after Narrows got two unearned runs in the top of the third inning, Craig County (1-6) came back with three earned runs in the bottom of the inning to claim the non-district game 3-2. Mike All and Kevin Lucas singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. John Crawford then hit a two-run double and Chris Blankenship brought in the deciding run with a two-out single. Craig County sophomore Ben Boardwine (1-2) pitched seven innings, struck out eight and walked four.

In Galax, Bobby Fields' two-out, bottom-of-the-seventh-inning single scored the winning run as Galax beat Giles 6-5 in a Mountain Empire District game. Fields' hit came on a 3-2 count with runners on first and second and completed Galax's comeback from a 4-0 deficit. It made a winner of pitcher Jeff Spells, who threw a complete game and struck out 14. Giles' Matt McGuire had a two-run home run. Galax is 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the district; Giles, 1-3 and 0-1.

At Riner, Bradley Hudgins was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as Auburn beat Shawsville 13-3 in a game shortened to six innings because of the slaughter rule. Auburn pitcher Todd Collins improved to 3-0. Auburn is 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the Mountain Empire District; Shawsville is 4-2 and 0-1.

At William Byrd, Kevin Saunders went 3-for-4 for the Terriers (5-0), who handled E.C. Glass 12-5. Chris Carr and Kenny Rickerson each had two hits, and pitcher Mike McGuire (2-0) allowed two hits and struck out six. E.C. Glass is 0-4. Northside travels to William Byrd to start Blue Ridge District play at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Jeff Highfill scored three goals and Wallace Thompson had three assists as Radford defeated host Northside 5-4. For Northside (0-4-1), Aaron Curfiss scored two goals and J.J. Larsen had for assists.

\ SOFTBALL: At Fairfield, Rockbridge County pitchers issued 22 walks and the Rebels fouled up in the field as Covington won 40-19. Covington had two 15-run innings, the first and the fourth. Rockbridge County is 0-3.

At Buchanan, Kara Mundy was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and Ambra Vines was 3-for-5 with a triple as James River (3-0) downed Floyd County 11-6 in a non-district game. Sherry Allison improved to 3-0. The Buffaloes are 1-2.

At Breckenridge Middle School in Roanoke, Shantee Johnson had a solo homer as E.C Glass romped past William Fleming 14-1. Kelly Creasy's double drove in the only run for the Colonels (0-3). E.C. Glass is 2-2.
