BASEBALL-FERRUM'S SMITH BREAKS RBI MARK

At Lynchburg, senior Jerold Smith went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs to break Ferrum's career RBI mark in the Panthers' 11-5 victory over Lynchburg (6-13). Smith had two doubles and a two-run homer. Smith, tied with Grant Renfrow with 140 RBI before the game, now has 145. Winner Keith Mayhew pitched nine innings, struck out nine and walked one. Ferrum (16-4) plays Elon at Martinsville's Hooker Field tonight at 7.

At Boone, N.C., Virginia Tech (20-7) used a five-run fourth inning and a four-run eighth to propel itself to a 10-5 non-conference victory over Appalachian State at Red Lackey Field. Tech starter Brian Fitzgerald earned the win, giving up two earned runs on six hits in five innings. Mike Reedy led Tech's offense, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. John Bonner went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Mountaineers (10-22), who had led 2-0. Tech had eight hits and four errors; Appalachian State had 10 hits and five errors.

At Radford, Erik Sauve had two home runs as Virginia Commonwealth beat Radford 11-7. Sauve scored four runs and drove in four for VCU (18-13). The Rams led 7-6 after five innings, but Sauve homered in the sixth to push the lead to 8-6. VCU's Jeff Marr (3-2) got the win with help from Adam Bryant, who got his ninth save. Duane Filchner had a two-run homer for Radford (16-11).
