TECH'S ALFANO COACH OF YEAR

Virginia Tech coach Carol Alfano has been voted the Virginia Sports Information Directors women's basketball coach of the year, and the Virginia Cavaliers' Heather Burge is the state's player of the year.

Alfano led the Hokies from a 10-18 record a year ago to a 20-8 record this season. She also was voted the Metro Conference coach of the year and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association District III coach of the year.

Burge averaged 19.1 points and 7.7 rebounds in leading the Cavaliers to the NCAA East Region final. She was the ACC player of the year and a first-team All-American.

\ Shannan Wilkey and Tammie Crown of Radford have been selected to the Women's Sports Federation Fast Break All-America teams.

Crown, a 6-foot-1 senior from Murfreesboro, Tenn., was selected to the third team. She was the Big South Conference player of the year, averaging 15 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the Highlanders, who went 17-11 and won their fourth consecutive conference championship. Wilkey, a 5-7 junior guard from Edinboro, Pa., led the Big South in scoring with a 17.3 average. She was MVP of the conference tournament.

Heather Burge of the University of Virginia made the first team, and Lisa Allison of Roanoke, Va., a senior at Campbell, was selected to the special-mention team.
