BASEBALL-GENERALS LOSE TWICE TO GUILFORD

Johnny Hughes threw a one-hit shutout in the second game as Guilford defeated Washington and Lee 4-0 to sweep an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader in Lexington.

Hughes carried a no-hitter into the seventh and final inning before W&L right fielder Bates Brown singled. The Quakers (24-9 overall, 12-4 ODAC) led 1-0 before scoring three times in the sixth inning.

Guilford first baseman Steve Foulks went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run as the Quakers won the first game 5-1. Duane Van Arsdale was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Generals (4-13, 3-11).

At Hampden-Sydney, pitchers Neal Butt and Tim Johnson each picked up complete game victories as the Tigers defeated Emory & Henry 5-0 and 6-1 in another ODAC doubleheader.

In the first game, Butt allowed the Wasps (15-12, 7-9) only two hits as Marshall Melvin and Mark Hazlewood each hit home runs in Hampden-Sydney's shutout victory.

Johnson allowed only four hits and one run in the nightcap as Brad Farmer hit a three-run homer to power the Tigers (8-6, 14-7).

Right-hander Steve Basch threw a four-hit complete game as The Citadel completed a doubleheader sweep of Southern Conference foe VMI by defeating the Keydets 4-0 in Charleston, S.C.

Chris Lemonis' single scored Vic Correll from second base as the Bulldogs (29-22, 12-9) won the first game 3-2. With two outs, Correll singled and stole second to get into scoring position.

In the fourth inning, Lemonis doubled with one out and scored one out later on a single by Billy Hutto.

Correll hit a two-run single to give The Citadel a 3-2 victory in the first game. The Bulldogs claimed a 1-0 advantage in the third when Kirk McMillan doubled home David Beckley from first base with two outs. VMI (17-26, 5-14) captured a 2-1 lead off John Price in the fourth on a run-scoring base hit by Billy Terry and a sacrifice fly by Payne.

Duane Filchner hit an RBI single with two out in the eighth inning to lift Radford to an 8-7 Big South victory over Maryland-Baltimore County as the Highlanders earned a split in a doubleheader at Radford.

Filchner, who ranks fifth in the nation in RBI, knocked in his 49th run of the year and went 4-for-5 in the second game.

Retrievers pitcher Kevin Loewe held the Highlanders (9-8, 21-14) to six hits as UMBC rolled past Radford 12-3 in the first game. Loewe (6-0) shut out Radford for six innings before the Highlanders scored three runs in the seventh.

In the second game, Maryland-Baltimore County (9-6, 17-10) opened a 6-1 lead but Bill Brennan's two-run homer in the fourth sliced the margin to 6-3. After UMBC scored again, Tom Curran and Alex Vaxmonsky walked with one out. Filchner followed with a two-run double and scored on a single by Denny Van Pelt to make the score 7-6. Filchner, Radford's left fielder, made a catch against the wall in the sixth innning to squelch a scoring threat. He produced a one-out double in the seventh off Brian Raino (3-4). Brennan hit an RBI single with two outs to tie the score 7-7.

Highlander catcher John Gegg and third baseman Rob Wilson started the bottom of the eighth with singles and Rob Amos was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two out, Filchner belted a single over the head of leftfielder Jason Kasch for the deciding run.
