1.1 BILLION PEOPLE LIVE ON LESS THAN $1 A DAY

More than 1.1 billion people in developing countries live on income of less than a dollar a day, the World Bank said Wednesday.

Bank President Lewis T. Preston, presenting the institution's book-length report on poverty in the world, said the number of people at that income level increased by about 88 million in the five years before 1990.

The report did not include figures on the former Soviet Union, but found about 5 million earning less than $1 per day in the former satellite countries of Eastern Europe.
