BLACKSBURG GIRLS WIN TRACK MEET

Katie Ollendick broke a school record for the high jump with a 5-foot, 8-inch leap as Blacksburg defeated Christiansburg 80-47 in a New River District girls' track and field meet Wednesday.

Ollendick also won the 800 run but was defeated in the 400 by the Indians' Nikki Hunt. Ollendick was the anchor for the winning mile relay team. Hunt also won the 200.

In other track Wednesday:

Grayson County's Michael Brown ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.8 seconds and Jeff Spells won the high jump, long jump, discus and triple jump as Galax took a Mountain Empire District meet on the Maroon Tide's track with 97 points to 80 for Narrows.

At Blacksburg, Von Lewis won both hurdles events and placed second in the long, triple and high jumps as Christiansburg defeated Blacksburg 75-49. For the Indians, Jason Kipps won the 1,600 and 3,200, and Tom Springer took first in the long, triple and high jumps.

\ BASEBALL: At Hillsville, Zack Foley pitched a no-hitter as Carroll County shut out Pulaski County 5-0. Foley walked two, struck out eight and hit one batter. Ray Briggs slammed a two-run homer for the Cavaliers (10-1), and Jason Kilbourne had a run-scoring double. The Cougars are 1-10.

At Salem, Tracy Butt had five of Salem's 10 stolen bases and the Spartans edged Blacksburg 9-8. Butt went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Tommy Lee went 2-for-4 and scattered seven hits in pitching the win.

At Bedford, Liberty (7-3) defeated Buckingham County 8-6 in a Seminole District game as Jerry Padgett slammed a three-run homer, and Mike Thompson and Curt Goff hit solo homers. John Gordon and Greg Smith each had two hits. Buckingham County is 1-6.

At Nelson County, Jefferson Forest (9-2) beat Nelson County (3-6) 8-4 in a Seminole District game to remain in second place behind Amherst County by one game. Ryan Gilleland went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI. Winner Anthony Poindexter (2-1) allowed three hits and struck out six.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Brookville, Liberty (5-1) won 2-0 over the Bees (5-3) in a Seminole District match. Joel Allen scored twice with assists from Chris Blair and Jonathan Hubbard.
