TIMESLAND SWINGS BACK INTO ACTION

The schedule is set for Timesland in state baseball and softball tournaments this week.

The tournaments get under way with a bang at 4 p.m. today, when Salem takes on Richlands at Richlands Recreation Park in a Group AA state quarterfinal softball game.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools since the disputed 1992 Group AA Division 4 football playoff game, which Richlands won 17-7. Salem protested that loss several weeks later because Richlands players wore illegal cleats during the game. Even though Richlands coach Dennis Vaught admitted the violation, the Blue Tornadoes were allowed to retain the state title they won with a victory over Orange County the week after the Salem game.

In other softball games, Glenvar will play Honaker at 3 p.m. Thursday at Green Run Park in Salem, and James River travels to St. Paul in Group A first-round action at 4 p.m. Thursday.

In baseball, Jefferson Forest travels to Bluefield to battle Richlands on Thursday. The time has not been announced for the first-round Group AA game.

Glenvar plays its first-round game in the Group A state tournament against Honaker at 1 p.m. Saturday at Salem High School.

In other sports in the region:

Roanoke College lacrosse standout Steve Hoffmann, who played primarily a defensive role for the Maroons, has been chosen as a first-team All-American in Division III.

Hoffmann, a midfielder, was one of five Roanoke players cited. Colin McGahren was chosen third-team at midfield and three Maroons were selected honorable mention - attackman Brett Smith, defenseman Joe LaTona and goalie Craig Fleming.

Washington and Lee attackman Wiemi Douoguih, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year, made the second-team All-America squad. Defenseman Josh Levinson was a third-team selection, and midfielder John Hunter and goalie Brian Murtagh made honorable mention.

Roanoke has had three first-team All-America selections in midfield in the last two years, including McGahren and Don Treacy in 1992.

"It's pretty amazing that Hoffmann was chosen, because he's a long-stick middie," Roanoke coach Bill Pilat said. "It's hard to sneak them in there."

Hoffmann occasionally moved from midfield to defense to check a potent attackman.

Four current and four former University of Virginia women's lacrosse players have been selected to U.S. national teams.

Current Cavaliers standout Cherie Greer and former UVa stars Kristen Aceto (Class of '90), Elaine Jones ('90), Robyn Nye ('91) and Bonnie Rosen ('92) were named to the U.S. Elite Squad. Greer, Aceto and Nye also are finalists for the U.S. World Cup team that will play in Edinboro, Scotland, in July.

Amy Breen, Kelly Daddona and Tara Kelly - all current Cavaliers - have been chosen for the U.S. development program, which makes them eligible for all U.S. teams.

Virginia shortstop Jason Cook was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 55th round of major-league baseball's amateur draft. Cook, a senior from Fairfax, started all 51 games for the Cavaliers and led the team in runs (40), walks (33) and on-base percentage (.434). He batted .314, with two homers and 29 RBI.

For the first time since 1989, two members of the Virginia women's team have earned All-America honors in track and field. Junior Sherry Gould of Charlottesville earned honors with a fifth-place finish in the high jump at the recent NCAA championships in New Orleans. Senior Kelly Bodiford of Massillon, Ohio, finished ninth in the discus and earned All-America honors as one of the top eight Americans in the event.

Hanging Rock assistant pro Chip Sullivan shot a 1-under-par 143 for 36 holes Monday in the Mid-Atlantic Region U.S. Open qualifier at Rockville, Md., but still came up short in his bid for a berth in the June 17-20 tournament in Springfield, N.J. PGA Tour players Fred Funk (138), Vance Haefner (138) and Richmond's Robert Wrenn (139) won the three available spots spots in the 35-player qualifying field.
