18 BLACKSBURG RESIDENTS HOMELESS FROM SUNDAY FIRE

Eighteen town residents, most of them college students, lost their homes and possessions in a morning fire Sunday when six apartments suffered fire and water damage.

The damaged units were part of an apartment development at 305 Webb St., across Prices Fork Road from the Virginia Tech campus.

The fire, reported on a 911 call at 12:25 a.m. Sunday, started on a third-floor balcony area. The cause has not been determined, Blacksburg Fire Chief Keith Bolte said Tuesday.

Two apartments were burned and four others suffered water damage, Bolte said. Damage was estimated at $75,000.

There were no injuries.

Five of the six apartments were rented by students, said Tom Treakle of MCR Property Management. Most of those living in the apartments found places to stay with friends or moved into other apartments after the fire, but two people were assisted by the Red Cross.

MCR's insurance company gave approval to rebuild this week, and Treakle said the six apartments should re-open Aug. 15.

All 12 apartments in the building were evacuated at first, but tenants in the six apartments in the back half of the building were able to move back in, Treakle said.

He said Tech officials have helped students replace books lost in the fire and reschedule classwork.
