BUCS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH ROCKS

The Salem pitching staff gave up only five hits in two games Tuesday night, but the Buccaneers still managed only a split of their Carolina League baseball doubleheader with the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Hugh Walker's solo home run in the fifth spoiled Dave Doorneweerd's splendid effort in the opener and lifted Wilmington to a 1-0 victory. The Bucs won the second game 6-2 behind a combined two-hitter by Doug Harrah and Jason Christiansen.

Doorneweerd held the Blue Rocks to three hits in six innings. Besides Walker's homer, former Longwood College star Michael Tucker collected the Blue Rocks' other two hits, both singles.

Salem (26-32) broke through in the third inning of the second game, scoring two runs on three hits. Ken Bonifay hit a two-run homer in the fifth, boosting Salem's lead to 4-0.

Darren Burton's two-run homer in the sixth off Harrah supplied Wilmington's runs.

\ BUCSHOTS: The Blue Rocks, whose 37-21 record is the best in the league, reduced their magic number for clinching the Northern Division pennant to six with the first-game triumph. . . . The two clubs will complete a game suspended in early April before tonight's regularly scheduled contest. . . . The Bucs had lost nine of 11 games before winning the nightcap. . . . Tuesday's doubleheader opened an eight-game road trip for Salem.
