$1 MILLION EMBEZZLEMENT SUSPECTED

Federal authorities are investigating the suspected embezzlement of at least $1 million from Piedmont Trust Bank in Martinsville.

The investigation, spearheaded by the FBI, began about six weeks ago, when the bank's internal audit turned up irregularities in accounts in the trust division of the $743 million bank.

"The bank is currently working with the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office to determine the extent of the irregularities and the culpable party or parties," the bank said in a statement.

Piedmont BankGroup Inc. includes Piedmont Trust Bank, Bank of Carroll, Bank of Ferrum, First Community Bank, First National Bank of Stuart and the First National Bank of Saltville.

The company earned $7.13 million last year.

The U.S. Attorney's Office, which is overseeing the investigation, would not comment Wednesday afternoon.

But court records unsealed Wednesday at the request of the Roanoke Times & World-News show the FBI has requested permission to search the office and Ridgeway residence of Susan Stone, who has served as a trust officer at the bank.

The search warrant grants authorities permission to search personal computers in Stone's office and her house.

Stone's husband answered the telephone at their home Wednesday afternoon and said she would have no comment.

G. Marshall Mundy, a Roanoke attorney representing Stone, could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.
