SOFTBALL, BASEBALL STANDOUTS PICKED FOR ALL-STAR SQUADS

Salem's Michelle Harrison, the Timesland softball player of the year, and teammate Yolanda Helm lead the West squad for the Virginia High School Coaches' Association all-star softball game.

The Spartans are part of a contingent of eight Timesland players on the West squad for the softball game, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 14 at Briar Field Park in Hampton.

Other selections include All-Timesland members Kelly Fackler of Fieldale-Collinsville, Temika Hodge of Magna Vista, Janell Sowers of Lord Botetourt and Bobbie Jo Wright of Glenvar. In addition, James River's Melissa Markham and Bath County's Chris Robertson are on the team.

William Byrd's Gary Wiggins was the only All-Timesland pick to make the West team for the all-star baseball game, set for 7 p.m. July 14 at Hampton's War Memorial Stadium. Other area players on the West team are Fort Chiswell's B.W. Hill, Liberty's Michael Thompson, Carroll County's Kevin DeHaven and Jefferson Forest's Vince Whorley, who was a second-team All-Timesland choice.
