Heilig-Meyers

Heilig-Meyers Co., Richmond-based home furnishings retailer with stores in Western Virginia, on Wednesday reported record revenues and earnings for the first quarter ended May 31, 1993.

Net earnings increased 28.6 percent to $13.5 million, or 44 cents per share, from $10.5 million, or 35 cents per share, in the 1992 quarter. Total revenues rose 23.7 percent to $186.8 million from $150.9 million.

The company also said it has bought assets of 11 of the 12 stores owned by the L. Fish Furniture Co. All of the stores are in Illinois.

Heilig-Meyers operated 438 stores at the end of the quarter. Including the former L. Fish stores, it operates 450 stores in 16 states.

\ Brendle's

Brendle's Stores Inc., Elkin, N.C., retailer operating under bankruptcy protection during reorganization, on Wednesday reported a first-quarter net loss of $4.6 million for 43 stores. In the year-earlier quarter, losses were $6.9 million for 51 stores. The $2.3 million improvement exceeded goals by $700,000, the company said.

Sales were $33.3 million vs. $42.3 million a year earlier. Comparable-store sales were up 4 percent in May from May 1992.

The company has been closing stores since fall. It recently closed a store at Valley View Mall, one of its two Roanoke stores. A liquidation company is selling the merchandise there. The other Brendle's store is at Tanglewood Mall.
