NEWBERN TO RE-ENACT CIVIL WAR THIS WEEKEND

Newbern will take on the appearance of a Civil War site this weekend in a fund-raising event for the Wilderness Road Regional Museum.

Civil War re-enactors in uniform from as far off as Massachusetts and Ohio will start setting up camp Friday. Replica clothing and military equipment are among items that will be offered for sale.

Camps with living history displays will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. A battlefield tactical display will start at 1 p.m.

A traditional ladies' tea will be served in the museum at 2:30 p.m. and the museum will serve a home-cooked supper to the troops and their families at 5:30 p.m.

From 8 to 10 p.m., the Bow Shakers will provide entertainment with the Virginia reel, waltzes, polkas and other dances.

Museum displays will include Civil War photographs. Books including "The 54th Virginia Infantry" ($17.50), T-shirts imprinted with "The Battle of Cloyds Mountain" ($11), raffle tickets on a numbered print of Robert E. Lee and other items will be sold.

A parade honoring the people of Newbern and those who fought in the Battle of Cloyds Mountain 129 years ago will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, featuring the Virginia Highlands Pipes and Drums.

The main battle re-enactment will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Tabor's Farm two blocks from the museum. It will be narrated on a public address system by Bob Thomas, news director of radio station WRAD/WRIQ in Radford.

Donations of $2 for adults and $1 for children up to age 12 will be requested for the battle.

A worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday will be held at the pre-Civil War Newbern Christian Church on Virginia 611 (Old Wilderness Road). A re-enactor parson will speak.
