AIRLINER STARTS ATTEMPT FOR LONGEST-FLIGHT RECORD

An Airbus A-340 took off Wednesday from the Paris Air Show on an attempt to break the record for longest non-stop flight by a commercial airliner.

The crew of the four-engine plane hopes to complete a round-the-world trip with a single stop for refueling in Auckland, New Zealand.

The 11,968-mile leg to Auckland is the longest non-stop flight ever attempted by a commercial airliner, organizers said.

Organizers said the existing non-stop distance record for a commercial plane is a London-to-Sydney flight in 1989 by a Boeing 747.
